Class Association
AGM 2010 |
Much loved past chairman
of the CCA died suddenly at Sidlesham, West Sussex.
From
John Peperell, CCA Secretary:
Matthew had many facets to his full but short life. Sailing was one
of these facets and it was through sailing that we met. I can remember
our first meeting – we were racing around the Isle of Sheppey. Why would
anyone want to do that you may ask? When one looks back it is amazing
what one did for pleasure! I can remember Matthew offered me a beer
after the race and that was the start of 24 years of friendship.
Matthew’s involvement in the Catapult Class Association was long and
fruitful. He was chairman for more than 10 years and during his tenure
the association had its largest membership. He initiated new sailing
venues for us – notably Glenridding in Cumbria and Pagham just down the
coast from his home.
Matthew was a big fan of Jon Montgomery’s catamarans and when Jon
announced that the slewing 5.5 was for sale, Matthew did not hesitate to
buy this unique sailing machine. I can remember a particular time
sailing the 5.5 with him in Pagham harbour – we had a good SW force 6.
It was great fun until the fore stay broke and the mast crashed on top
of us! Getting the heavy 5.5 back to base was no easy task but
thankfully Matthew was very strong and nearly twenty years my junior!
The Association members will remember Matthew most for his light-heated
and spontaneous humour. He was a very kind man – he took the trouble to
visit both Heather and myself whilst we were in hospital. We all loved
him; that is what is so tragic.
I know all the members of the Catapult Class Association
will want me to convey their love and thoughts to Chirlene, Suzanna and
Max.
